A cardigan is a sweater with a front opening, and the opening is where the extra work is: the front edges and closure have to be built into the knit, not bolted on afterwards. This page is for the brand commissioning that garment — the parent knitwear page covers the wider sweater floor and why its minimum differs from jersey.
The cardigans we make
Ribbed and button-through cardigans in fine gauge, and open-stitch, crochet-look pieces — the grey button-through and cream open-stitch cardigans in the gallery are our own production. A button-through cardigan also features in our school-uniform range.
Each is knitted to shape: the panels are knitted as finished pieces on flat-bed machines, linked together and finished by hand, rather than cut from cloth. That is what makes a cardigan a different order from a sweatshirt.
What changes compared with a pullover
The front opening adds work a pullover does not have, which is why a cardigan is its own style rather than a pullover with a split down the middle. If you are costing both, treat them as two styles, each with its own setup.
We confirm gauge, yarn composition and yarn count against a reference garment or tech pack before quoting, because those decide the machine, the setup time and the price.
Minimum, colours and lead time
Cardigans are sweater-knit garments and start at 500 pieces per style, against 50 for jersey hoodies and tees. The minimum is per style, not per size — your size run sits inside it — and within one design you can generally run more than one colourway, with the split confirmed at quote.
Add 7–10 days to standard 12–15 day production for a custom knit and dye run, with sampling in front. Cardigans are an autumn-winter product, so confirm in the first half of the year if you can.
When a cardigan is not the right order here
If you need a cardigan in the tens of pieces, we are not the right factory: the setup is amortised over a long run, and 500 pieces per style is where it works. Small-run knitters exist and for a first test of a design they can be the right trade, at a much higher price per piece.

- Cable Knit SweatersCable-knit sweaters in Aran-style textures — crewnecks, roll-necks and turtlenecks from our own floor, knitted to shape on flat-bed machines and finished by hand, at 500 pieces per style.
- Jacquard & Fair Isle KnitsFair Isle and jacquard sweaters, knitted to shape on flat-bed machines — priced honestly for what multiple yarns across a row do to the machine, at 500 pieces per style.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is your minimum order for cardigans?
Cardigans are sweater-knit garments and start at 500 pieces per style, counted per design rather than per size. We confirm the exact minimum when we quote.
What types of cardigan do you make?
Ribbed and button-through fine-gauge cardigans, and open-stitch crochet-look cardigans, as shown in the gallery on this page. We confirm gauge, yarn and closure against your reference garment before quoting.
Can I split the minimum across colours?
Usually, within one design: the machine programming is shared and only the yarn changes. The exact split depends on the yarn and pattern and is confirmed at quote.
