Garment dyeing is the difference between a flat, uniform colour and one with depth — the shirt is constructed first and dyed afterwards, so the seams take colour slightly differently and the hand softens. The catch is usually minimums: dye houses want volume per colour. Ours is 25 pieces, which means a colourway can be a genuine experiment rather than a commitment.
Piece-dyed versus garment-dyed
Piece dyeing colours the fabric on the roll before it is cut. It is cheaper, more consistent, and right for most orders — but it produces a flat, uniform colour with no character at the seams.
Garment dyeing colours the finished garment. Because thread, seams, and body take dye at slightly different rates, you get the tonal variation that a washed or vintage look depends on, along with a noticeably softer hand. It also shrinks the garment, which is why the pattern has to be cut oversized to land on your intended finished measurements.

What to expect, honestly
Garment dyeing trades consistency for character, and you should go in knowing that. Batch-to-batch variation is inherent to the process — a reorder six months later will be extremely close but not laser-identical, and any factory promising otherwise is describing piece dyeing.
Pigment dyeing goes further on purpose: it is designed to fade with wear and washing, which is the appeal for vintage-look product and a problem if your customer expects colourfastness. We will ask which of the two you actually want before quoting, because the complaint patterns are completely different.

Yes — the garment shrinks during dyeing. We cut the pattern oversized so it finishes at your intended measurements, which is why the specification has to state finished-after-dye dimensions rather than cut dimensions. Getting this wrong is the most common garment-dye mistake.
Can I match a specific Pantone colour?
