A cable is a stitch pattern you can read from across a room, which is exactly why it is the knit that exposes a weak factory. The pattern has to be programmed into the machine, the tension has to hold the twist, and the panels have to link up so the cable runs unbroken across the seam. This page is about commissioning that garment; the parent knitwear page covers the wider sweater floor.
What we make in cable knit
Cable knits and Aran-style textures, in crewnecks, roll-necks and turtlenecks — the two cable pieces in the gallery above are our own production, not a stock library. The same construction carries across to cardigans and pullovers.
Like every sweater here, a cable knit is knitted to shape: front, back and sleeves are each knitted as finished panels on flat-bed machines, then joined on a linking machine and finished by hand. Nothing is cut from cloth.
Why a cable is a harder brief than a plain knit
A cable pulls the fabric in. The same panel width in a plain stitch and in a cable does not come off the machine at the same size, so the programme has to be set for your finished measurements in every size rather than copied from a plain-knit block. That is why the swatching and tension-correction round comes before anything sellable is made.
Yarn matters more here than on a plain rib. A chunky yarn gives a bold, sculptural cable; a fine one gives a delicate texture, and they are different machines and different setup times. We confirm gauge, yarn composition and yarn count against your reference garment or tech pack before quoting, rather than publishing a range we would then have to retract.
Minimum, colours and lead time
Cable-knit sweaters start at 500 pieces per style — a different floor from the 50-piece minimum on jersey hoodies and tees, for the reasons on the parent knitwear page. The minimum is per style, not per size: your size curve sits inside one style. Within one cable design you can generally run more than one colourway against the same setup, because the programming is shared and only the yarn changes; the exact split is confirmed at quote.
A custom knit and dye run adds 7–10 days on top of standard 12–15 day production, and the sampling round sits in front of that. Cable knit is an autumn-winter product, so brief it in the first half of the year, when flat-bed capacity is not yet booked by everyone else.
What to send us
- A physical reference sweater if you have one — for knitwear it tells us more than any specification
- Or a photograph of the cable pattern and the finished measurements you want per size
- The yarn you have in mind, or a description of the hand-feel, so we can confirm what we can source
- Your destination market, because it decides what the care label must carry
What we cannot certify
Our facility is BSCI certified for social compliance and we can source organic and recycled-content yarn. We cannot provide a GOTS, GRS or OEKO-TEX certificate chain for a knitwear programme — a certified claim needs a certified mill behind it, and we will tell you so rather than let you find out at audit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum order for a cable knit sweater?
Cable-knit sweaters start at 500 pieces per style. That is a higher floor than the 50-piece minimum for jersey garments such as hoodies and t-shirts, because a flat-bed knit programme has to be set up, swatched and tension-corrected for your measurements before anything sellable is made.
Can you match a cable pattern from a sample or photo?
A physical reference garment is the best starting point, because we can measure the gauge and read the stitch directly. A clear photograph with finished measurements also works for a first quote. We confirm gauge and yarn against it before pricing and tell you plainly if it is outside what we can run or source.
Which cable-knit garments do you make?
Crewnecks and turtlenecks are in our own gallery, and the same construction applies to cardigans and pullovers.
How long does a cable knit programme take?
Standard production is 12–15 days; a custom knit and dye run adds 7–10 days, and the sampling round comes before both. Because sweaters are an autumn-winter product, programmes confirmed in the first half of the year run most comfortably.
Can you provide organic or certified yarn?
We can source organic cotton and recycled-content yarn and our facility is BSCI certified for social compliance. We cannot provide a GOTS, GRS or OEKO-TEX certificate chain for knitwear, so if your claim depends on one you need a certified supplier.
