How Much Does It Cost to Manufacture Clothing? (2026 Guide)

Manufacturing cost is the first question every brand asks and the hardest to answer in one number, because a "t-shirt" can cost $2.50 or $9.00 depending on choices you have not made yet. This guide breaks down the real cost drivers and gives honest 2026 price ranges so you can budget before you request a quote.

Ballpark per-piece ranges for 2026

These are typical factory-direct ranges at moderate quantities (a few hundred to a few thousand pieces) for custom, private-label production. Small runs sit at the higher end; large runs and simpler specs move lower.

  • Basic custom t-shirt (140–180 GSM): ~$2.50–4.50/pc
  • Premium heavyweight tee (240–280+ GSM): ~$4–7/pc
  • Polo shirt (piqué or performance): ~$5–10/pc
  • Pullover hoodie (fleece/French terry): ~$8–15/pc
  • Joggers / sweat shorts: ~$6–12/pc
  • Tote bags and caps: ~$1.50–5/pc depending on weight and decoration

The seven things that actually move your price

  • Fabric: fiber, GSM, and finish — the single biggest cost input
  • Construction: seams, ribbing, linings, and hardware add labor
  • Decoration: screen print, DTF/DTG, sublimation, or embroidery
  • Quantity: higher volume spreads fixed costs and lowers per-unit price
  • Trims and branding: woven labels, hang tags, custom packaging
  • Compliance and certification: GOTS/GRS, lab testing, audits
  • Shipping terms: FOB, CIF, or DDP change your landed cost

Fabric is where most of the cost lives

Fabric usually accounts for the largest share of a garment’s cost, which is why GSM and fiber choice matter so much. Moving a tee from 180 GSM to 240 GSM meaningfully raises fabric cost; switching to certified organic cotton raises it again. This is the first lever to pull if you need to hit a target price without cutting construction quality.

Sampling and one-off costs to budget for

Beyond per-piece price, budget for sampling. Rates vary by factory; ours is USD 60 per style for a blank or USD 85 with your branding, plus USD 45 shipping, credited back against your bulk order. Screen printing carries a per-color setup (screen) cost that only makes sense to amortize across larger runs — for small, multi-color art, DTF or DTG avoids that setup entirely.

Per-unit cost is higher at 50 pieces than at 1,000 and we are explicit about where the breaks fall, on our low MOQ manufacturing page.

How to hit a target price honestly

If a quote comes in over budget, a good manufacturer tells you exactly what would need to change to reach your target — a lighter fabric, simpler construction, a different decoration method, or a higher quantity — rather than quietly substituting cheaper inputs. Ask for the itemized breakdown so you can decide which trade-offs you are comfortable with.
