Woven vs knit: why it matters

Knits (tees, hoodies) are made from looped yarn that stretches; wovens are made from yarns crossed at right angles, giving a crisp, structured, non-stretch fabric. That structure is what makes a shirt look sharp — but it also means fit and pattern-making must be precise, because the fabric will not forgive a bad cut.

Choose a manufacturer that genuinely runs wovens, not just a knits factory taking on a shirt order.

Fabric choices drive the whole product

Woven shirting spans a wide range, and the fabric defines the product:

• Flannel: brushed, soft, warm — casual autumn/winter shirts and overshirts
• Oxford: durable basketweave — smart-casual button-downs
• Twill / chambray: structured, versatile — workwear and casual shirts
• Consider GSM and weave for the drape and season you are targeting

Construction details that show quality

On a woven shirt, buyers notice the finishing: pattern-matched pockets and plackets, clean flat-felled or French seams, a well-constructed collar and cuffs, and consistent stitch density. Ask to see these on your sample, and check the fit on a body, not just flat.

Wovens usually need at least one fit sample because the non-stretch fabric shows fit issues a tee would hide. Woven minimums also sit higher than knit ones — 300 pieces per style against 50 for knitwear — because a woven run carries its own fabric and cutting setup. Budget for the quantity and for a proper fit round.
