The Complete Guide to Private Labeling & Custom Branding

Two identical tees: one says a brand made it, the other says someone printed a blank. The difference is rarely the garment — it is the labeling and packaging system around it. Here is the complete private-labeling stack, what each element costs, and the compliance details that catch new brands out.

Private-label garment production and fabric cutting

Neck labels: woven, printed, or embroidered

All three are standard, not add-ons, in our production — including sewing your labels into every piece and removing manufacturer branding entirely.

  • Woven labels: the premium standard — damask-woven logos, folded and sewn in. Typically $0.05–0.15/pc at production MOQs.
  • Printed (tagless) labels: heat-transferred or screen-printed inside the collar. Softest option, popular for athleisure and kids. Typically $0.05–0.12/pc.
  • Embroidered hem/collar branding: an external woven or embroidered flag label on the hem or cuff — the streetwear signature. Small cost, big shelf presence.

Care and content labels: the legally required one

Every market regulates what must appear on a permanent label: fiber content, care instructions, country of origin, and often an importer identity (like the RN number system in the US, or bilingual English/French labeling in Canada). Getting this wrong can block customs clearance or retail listing.

  • Tell your manufacturer the destination market — we print compliant care labels as part of the spec
  • Multi-market brands usually run one combined label covering the strictest requirements
  • "Made in Bangladesh" origin marking is required and, with duty preferences in several markets, works in your favor

Hang tags and swing tickets

The hang tag is marketing real estate: story, price, QR code, barcode. Standard cards cost cents; specialty stocks (kraft, recycled, letterpress, foil) more, but still usually under $0.20/pc with string and attachment included. For retail and marketplace programs we pre-attach barcode stickers or print barcodes directly on the tag.

Packaging: from polybag to unboxing

  • Standard: clear self-seal polybag per piece, size-stickered — included in most quotes
  • Eco upgrades: recycled-content polybags, paper-based garment bags, compostable films
  • Retail/DTC: printed mailer boxes, tissue, stickers — quoted per spec; MOQs on printed boxes typically start around 500–1,000 units
  • FBA and 3PL: carton specs, FNSKU labeling, and box-content compliance built into packing

What this looks like as an actual production programme, from neck label to retail-ready packing, is on our private label manufacturing page.

The order of operations for a new brand

Design your label set after your first sample is approved, not before — label sizes and placements depend on the final garment. Artwork in vector format (AI/PDF), Pantone codes for brand colors, and one round of physical label approval alongside your pre-production sample is the smooth path.

Cost reality check: a full private-label package — woven neck label, care label, hang tag, polybag — typically adds $0.15–0.50 per piece at production quantities. It is the cheapest brand equity you will ever buy.
