Sweater vs Sweatshirt: What Actually Separates Them in Production
The short answer: a sweater is knitted to shape, and a sweatshirt is cut and sewn from fabric. Everything else — the look, the price, the minimum order, how long it takes to make — follows from that one difference. If you are only settling an argument about what to call something, that sentence is the whole answer. If you are about to have one manufactured, the rest of this matters quite a lot, because briefing the wrong one is one of the more expensive mistakes a new brand can make.

The short answer, and the one that matters
A sweatshirt is cut-and-sew. Brushed fleece or French terry arrives as a roll of fabric, a marker is laid out to use the roll efficiently, panels are cut from it, and the panels are joined on an overlock machine. The fabric exists before the garment does. Every hoodie and crewneck sweatshirt you own was made this way.
A sweater is knitted to shape. There is no roll of fabric and nothing is cut. The front, the back and each sleeve are knitted as finished panels on a flat-bed machine — the ribbing, the neckline shaping and the armhole curve are built in as the panel grows, stitch by stitch — and the panels are then joined on a linking machine that connects them loop to loop rather than by sewing through cloth. The fabric and the garment come into existence at the same moment.
That is the whole distinction. A garment is a sweater if the shape was knitted; it is a sweatshirt if the shape was cut. It is not about weight, warmth, or whether the thing has a hood.
What "sweater knit" and "fully fashioned" actually mean
Sweater knit is the loose trade term for fabric with the open, visible loop structure you get from a flat-bed machine — the stitch is large enough to read with the naked eye, which is why cables, ribs, Fair Isle colourwork and open crochet-look stitches are all sweater-knit effects. Jersey and fleece are knitted too, in the strict sense, but on circular machines at a gauge so fine the individual loops disappear into what reads as a flat cloth.
"Fully fashioned" is the precise version of the same idea, and it is worth knowing because it is what a good knitwear factory will ask you about. A fully fashioned panel is shaped by adding and dropping stitches as it knits, so the armhole curve is knitted into the panel rather than cut into it afterwards. You can see it on a well-made sweater: the little diagonal marks a few stitches in from the armhole seam, where stitches were transferred inward. It uses no more yarn than the panel needs and leaves no cut edge to fray.
The alternative, common at lower price points, is cut-and-sew knitwear: knitting a long rectangle of sweater-look fabric and then cutting garment shapes out of it, exactly as you would with jersey. It is faster and cheaper, it wastes yarn, and the cut edges have to be secured because a large-loop knit will run. If you have ever had a sweater unravel from a seam, that is usually why.
How to tell which one you are holding
Look at the cuff and the hem first. On a sweater the ribbing is continuous with the body — the stitches run without interruption from the rib into the main panel, because they were knitted in one pass. On a sweatshirt the cuff is a separate piece of rib fabric, cut and sewn on, so there is a seam where it joins.
- Turn it inside out. Overlocked seams with a wrapped thread edge mean cut-and-sew; a flat, looped join with no cut edge means linked knitwear.
- Look at the stitch. If you can count individual loops from arm's length, it is sweater knit. If the surface reads as flat cloth, it is jersey or fleece.
- Check the inside face. A brushed, fuzzy interior is fleece — a hallmark of sweatshirting, and something flat-bed knitwear almost never has.
- Look just inside the armhole seam for fashioning marks. Small diagonal stitch transfers mean fully fashioned; a plain cut seam means the shape was cut.

Why the difference decides your minimum order
This is where the distinction stops being trivia. Cut-and-sew and flat-bed knitting have completely different setup costs, so they carry completely different minimums, and a buyer who does not know which one they are asking for cannot read a quote properly.
Setting up a cut-and-sew run means grading the pattern, laying a marker and cutting. It is real work, but it is hours, and the same fabric roll serves any number of styles. Setting up a knitted run means programming the machine for your exact measurements in every single size, knitting swatches and correcting tension until the fabric behaves, and then dedicating machine hours to producing panels one at a time. The programming is per style and per size, and none of it produces anything sellable.
The commercial consequence is direct. Our own jersey knitwear — t-shirts, hoodies, polos, sweatshirts and joggers — starts at 50 pieces per style. Sweater-knit garments, made on flat-bed machines rather than cut from jersey, start at 500 pieces per style. Both are honest numbers for the work involved, and the ten-fold gap is setup amortisation rather than margin. A brand that budgeted for the first figure and briefed a garment that requires the second has a problem no factory can negotiate away.
Lead time and season
A custom knit run adds roughly a week to ten days over an equivalent cut-and-sew program, for the swatching, programming and hand-finishing described above. That is predictable and you can plan around it.
What is less predictable, and catches more brands out, is capacity. Sweaters are an autumn-winter product almost everywhere they are sold, so every brand in the northern hemisphere briefs them inside the same few months, and flat-bed machine hours are what the industry collectively runs out of. Jersey capacity is far more elastic — a cutting table and a sewing line can absorb a rush. A flat-bed machine that is already knitting someone else's order cannot, and no amount of paying more conjures another one. Confirm knitwear early in the year; a sweatshirt program can wait far longer.
So which should your product be?
Choose cut-and-sew fleece if you want a heavyweight crewneck or hoodie, a large flat area for printing, a low first order, a short lead time, or a price point that has to compete with blanks. It is the right answer far more often than new brands expect, and there is nothing second-rate about it — most of the best-selling heavyweight streetwear in the world is cut-and-sew.
Choose knitted if the design depends on stitch texture: cables, ribs, colourwork, open stitches, a fine-gauge hand-feel, or a garment that reads as considered rather than casual. These are simply not available in fleece — you cannot print a cable onto a sweatshirt and get the same product, and buyers can tell instantly.
The failure mode worth naming is briefing a factory for "a knitted sweater" when the reference garment you have in mind is a brushed-fleece crewneck. It happens constantly, and it turns a straightforward 50-piece order into a 500-piece commitment for no design gain. Send the reference garment, or a photograph of its cuff and inside face, and any competent factory will tell you which of the two you are actually describing before you commit to anything.
